Location
Minto is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 48 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Campbelltown and is part of the Macarthur region.
Population
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in the year 2011 Minto had a population of 10,307 residents with approximately 339 Aboriginal Torres Strait Islanders. The original inhabitants of the land were the Tharawal Aboriginal people and today,the Campbelltown local government area still has one of the largest populations of people identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW with a total of 3,831 residents.
Services and Facilities
Transport
Minto railway station is serviced by the Airport, Inner West & South Line and Cumberland Line on the Sydney Trains network. Minto also has a small inland port connected by rail to Port Botany. The inland port consists of a single rail siding with an adjacent hard stand surface for the containers, and the siding is operated by top and tail trains with engines at both ends.
Schools and places of worship
Minto is home to two high schools, Sarah Redfern High and Alfaisal Collge; five primary schools, Campbellfield Public, Minto Public, Sarah Redfern Public,The Grange Public and Alfaisal collge; and a special school, Passfield Park, which services disabled students from pre-school through to high school.
There are also a few places of worship in the Minto area; Seventh- Day Adventist Church, Samoan Assembly of God- Campbelltown, Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, Reformed Congregational LMS Church and Mukti Gupteshwar Mandir.
Sport and recreation
Minto Sports Centre: The Minto Indoor Sports Centre is home to local basketball and netball teams. The Macarthur Heat plays in the New South Wales State Basketball League and uses the Centre as its home court. The Campbelltown District Netball Association, which is also based at the Centre, plays in the third division of the Netball NSW State League.
Minto has a rugby league team, the Minto Cobras playing in the Western Suburbs District Junior Rugby League. The Cobras home ground is Townson Oval. They have produced a number of NRL players. Mickey Paea, a current Bulldogs forward, always gives up his extra time and helps out Minto Cobras. The club is proud of him for doing that because not many NRL players would give up spare time to go visit the clubs where they played their junior footy.
Shopping Centres
There is one main shopping centre in the Minto area, Minto Marketplace. This shopping centre was once known as Minto Mall however in the year 2013 the mall was refurbished by the Pro Management Group as Minto Marketplace. This refurbishment brought new retailers such as Woolworths and Kmart to Minto.
Macarthur MP Russell Matheson had the following to say about the shopping centre;
"We've seen the One Minto redevelopment happen and people have been having to travel to Campbelltown or Macarthur Square to do their shopping," he said. "It will be great to have a shopping centre to also service the people of St Andrews, Bow Bowing and Ingleburn and I'm sure a lot of people will embrace a new shopping centre as it's an important part of the social fabric."
